Choosing a camera to shoot videos for your vlog can be troublesome when there are endless options of cameras to choose from when shopping online. You want to make sure you can find gear that will enable you to shoot quality videos, but also be affordable. Many people want to start off their vlogging venture with the best camera out there, and are often disappointed when they see the high prices of those cameras.
Don’t worry though! There are many less expensive options that you can use that will be perfectly suitable for vlogging. Besides, you can always do what I do – save up money from vlogging or other odd jobs, and buy more expensive and better quality gear down the road.
Start Small and Gear Up as Your Vlogging Improves
In my video I mentioned one particular camera that is affordable and is amazing for the general purpose of vlogging- the Canon Powershot G7X.
It’s a great camera that can be found in many online stores with a general price tag of around $600. It’s not the least expensive camera out there, but it’s far from the most expensive and is a wonderful camera. I’d say it’s definitely worth the price because you can take it anywhere with you without it being bulky, you can slide it right into your pocket, and it can be used as an all around camera to do amateur photography in addition to capturing videos for your vlog!
If you’re serious about your vlog and want a larger fan base and more views, a great investment would be an external mic, like the one I have on my Canon Rebel T5i which is also a great entry level DSLR Camera.
It’ll do wonders for the audio in your video and they aren’t pricey. You can find them online starting from around $20 to upwards of $250 depending on which one you like personally. This is the external shotgun mic I use.
When shopping for a camera, there are a few things that won’t apply to what you need if your primary intention is to use the camera for vlogging. Flash won’t matter, and neither will megapixels or zoom. What will matter, is something called low-light performance. If your camera doesn’t have good performance in low light it will reduce the frames per second and make the video grainy. One other thing to consider is the optical image stabilization. A camera with OIS is pretty necessary when you have a vlog, there will be shakiness in the video without it from movement. OIS helps to stabilize the image and display it clearly when you’re moving the camera while filming.
The other 2 features I consider a must have in a vlogging camera are:
- Ability to film in full HD 1080
- A flip out LCD screen so i can see myself and frame my shot while vlogging
Before buying any gear you need to consider what kind of videos you’re wanting to shoot; if you want videos that have more action in them, a GoPro camera or something similar is going to be better suited for you, while if you’re wanting to record tutorials from home you would be better off buying a DSLR camera. You need to consider your price range and factor in other gear you’ll need besides the camera, like an external mic, a tripod, and lenses for your camera.
There are numerous options when it comes to choosing your camera gear for your vlog; don’t stress about it too much and find something that seems like a good fit for you, not just a popular camera.
